You call this science?
There are some important articles in the literature on mass participation sporting events and mass gathering medicine. However, compared to areas like cardiology or cancer, the number of rigorous studies on this unique branch of prehospital and emergency medicine are miniscule. The Canadian literature in this area is particularly thin. Teams have been providing great care at big events for as long as they have been occurring in communities all over the world. Most teams just haven’t had the time, interest or resources to study and report on what they do. Time for a change.
